Tipperary’s Hidden Histories was born on Wednesday 5 September 2018 at the Nenagh base of Tipp FM, the Clonmel-based radio station that has been serving the county since 1989. The idea for the slot was conceived during a round of publicity for my third book, Mutiny or Murder: the bloodsoaked voyage of the Chapman Convict Ship, during the summer of 2018. It was suggested to me that, having a face for the radio, I should turn my talents to some sort of history slot. This prospect caused me much excitement as I have been a lifelong devotee of all things radio, all formats, presenters, regions and themes. A complete radio nerd! During July 2018 I appeared on the flagship Tipp FM mid-morning show, Tipp Today, to promote Mutiny or Murder. After a successful on-air chat, the unsuspecting host, Fran Curry said, ‘Conor, that was great, if you ever have any other stories, do come back’. I took my chance and in that moment, in the ad break, the idea for Tipperary’s Hidden Histories was born.
What Is Tipperary’s Hidden History?
It is a monthly radio slot dedicated purely to stories from the history of County Tipperary. Every story is based on my own original, professional historical research. THH is not about the ‘usual suspects’ of history. It is about the dark, the funny, the weird and the quirky. It is about people and communities. It is about the clash between the poor and the wealthy. It is about the odd behaviour of ordinary folk. It is about resistance and courage. Most of all, it is about trying to uncover what is hidden, what has not been noticed in previous histories.
